Got to visit for the first time Pica Pica Arepa Kitchen in San Francisco, CA and I was sure excited for this! They are 100% GLUTEN FREE and feature as their main dish a Venezulan Arepa which is a corn pocket that is filled with your choice of their signature family recipes. They offer vegan, vegetarian, and dairy free options as well. My date and I both came here in between lunch and dinner time. I ended up with a yellow corn arepa filled with the Blackened Beef Asado, sweet plantains, and queso fresco. Since I have a dairy allergy I got it with no queso fresco. My date ended up with a yellow corn arepa as well but filled with Grilled Chicken, black bean purée, tomato, queso fresco, and guasacaca. We both really enjoyed our arepas and they even came with a side of coleslaw which wasn’t even mayo based, which we really enjoyed. We also split a basket of yuca fries which is usually fried in the same fryer as dairy but they were able to fry them in the meat fryer for me to avoid cross contamination. Very accommodating!
They make their own spicy hot sauce that was really good and even mixed it into the ketchup available on the table giving it a nice kick. Would definitely come back here again and would classify it as one of my new favorite places.
Wow so I just had lunch here and this experience is really about as good as it gets. Just to preface everyone this was my experience at the Walnut Creek, CA location make sure to check with your local one on their procedures for avoiding cross contamination.
My dad has been trying to convince me to go to The Counter for the longest time since he really likes it and they have a gluten free menu with allergen charts online. So finally today I decided I would try it right when they opened so we could talk to them before they got to crowded. First we walked in and I quickly asked the hostess if they could accommodate someone with celiac disease and a dairy allergy, she nodded at me confidently and began to seat us. Our waiter came over and immediately brought me the allergen charts and the gluten free menu. He was fabulous; he told me they would do my burger in a fresh clean sauté pan so I don’t have any chance of cross contamination on the grill. The fries are also fried in a dedicated fryer so they were safe as well! He was very aware of the importance of celiac disease and severe allergies. After we got our order him I heard him talking to the cooks and it was great. He stressed the importance of my order with “allergy, allergy, allergy.” Explaining everything in detail I was thoroughly impressed. He was able to get us lists of ingredients of anything I wanted as well.
Our food came out and it was very good as well. I got the 1/3 pound beef patty with a gluten free bun (Udi’s); topped with the habanero salsa, cucumbers, tomatoes, mixed greens, sliced onions, and radishes. My dad and I also split an appetizer of fries which we think is a better deal than getting 2 side orders. We loved everything we got, my dad enjoyed their signature steak sauce which they told us is A1 sauce mixed with some more spices. The fries are addicting, they are the shoe string kind and are really yummy definitely a must get.
Overall definitely a five star experience; our waiter was great, food excellent, and very clean! If you have any allergy concerns or celiac disease this place can accommodate you! They have allergen charts and even a gluten free menu it really is a place that is trying to accommodate!
